Leaving California
Today's news revealed that more people, for the first time ever, are leaving California than are coming. Oddly, the people leaving are both white and Latino whereas in the past it was the Latino population that was immigrating here. Due to high housing costs and fewer jobs, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon and Washington are attractive to Californians.
I'm no economist, but maybe, if this keeps happening, more jobs will open from people leaving and housing prices will become lower? That would be nice woudln't it.

The taxes in California are too high.
There are plenty of economists working & interested in the issue Tamara. The first thing to surmise is that this is typically not a good thing, and it indicates that something has gone wrong with the quality of life. Too expensive, too crowded, too high tax structures would describe NY & NJ as well, but they still are growing, albeit more slowly. Housing costs are also high in many regions, but I suspect the killer for CA is the local tax structure and the serious over hang from ol' Prop 13 way back when. They had one of the best educational systems in the US, and now it's gone from 1st to almost worst in the West. That's a very serious consideration, and one that very few families are willing to tolerate for long. If your taxes are high and you're getting efficient services, that's one thing. But having very high taxes & expenses/costs but with no assurances that you can secure an advantage in vital & needed infrastructure and services with all that extra money is a serious deterrent to living there. This is what Arnold ran on, and he was supposed to be fixing it. So I imagine that'll happen anytime soon, right? Cheers & Good Luck! 'VJ'
I hope that things become a bit more affordable out there in the Golden state, but it will take a lot of folks departing to have any dent on the markets there. But we can dream for you...
