The Gift of a Lifetime

As I mentioned in the previous post, TG had eight well thought out gifts planned for me. Each was wrapped an numbered in the order I was to open them. I received some lovely books: a book of photography of synagogues around the world, a book on Jewish holidays with nice art and graphics, "The New Joys of Yiddish". He also framed me one of his Judaica photographs which is awesome because it's from and by him. There was a set of Jewish Heritage DVDs, a lovely challah cover.

The 2nd to last gift was a book about Jewish weddings and the customs, laws, and traditions surrounding them. I wasn't sure if I should read into why he was giving me this book or not. But of course, while I was reading the title he made a comment about how I shouldn't read anything into the book or take it as much of anything. Yes, I was confused.

The final gift was wrapped in a ball. It was wrapped in tissue paper. I opened that part, then there was paper towels, then there was toilet paper and the gift got much smaller. I thought it was a fancy glass dreidel. Finally, after unwrapping much toilet paper and paper towels :) I arrived at a box. The kind of box that makes your tummy get butterflies. The kind of box that every woman hopes to see someday. And I opened it.

Yes, there was a ring. But I wasn't positive what it meant. Silly right? TG sat there with a big smile and didn't say anything. I was perplexed. I asked what it meant - he smiled. I asked what finger I was supposed to put it on - he smiled. I asked if it was what I thought it was - he smiled. Then he explained that if he is moving to California so we can be together, which is something we've discussed, that he would only do it with a ring on my finger. That's how he asked me to marry him. It was funny, sweet, and non-traditional.

And so, as "out of my comfort zone" as it feels, how crazy and overwhelming and exciting as it is... TG and I are engaged. Before you start asking when, we first have much to work on. First and foremost we will work on the plans for when he will move. Because this is all so overwhelming (he has to sell stuff, relocate, get
situated in California) we will first plan the move and then discuss when we will get married. I'm guessing we'll do it a year after he moves, so we figure in a year or two. It's a long engagement but we're happy and know that we are both committed to eachother and to us.

The Ring: The diamond on the ring was TG's grandmother's. The band is an antique from 1920 I love it and I love the fact that it's an antique. Oh, and I love him too.

Wow! B'sha'ah tovah (may everything happen "in a good hour" -- I learned from a friend that that's the traditional thing to say upon an engagement, rather than "mazel tov")! I wish you both much happiness and joy. I am so very happy for you, Tamara!

How wonderful! Congratulations to you and to TG on the start of your lifetime together.

Hi Everyone,

First, to all of you who have congratulated TG and I; we both thank you from our hearts. It's wonderful to get support from our online friends.
