A Lovely Shabbat

I did something a little different and went to Shabbat dinner at one of the Chabad rabbi's homes last night. His name is Chalom, and is actually younger than my 32 years. He is the rabbi students at SDSU interact with.

Shabbat was great. There is something special about Jewish people from all different socio-economic, cultural, and levels of observancy coming together for food and prayer. First, the food was great. There was plenty of it, and honestly, if it weren't for the "not carrying on Shabbat" rule, I would have loved to contribute. Joining the dinner were 4 college guys from Austrailla which was pretty cool. Here they are, traveling halfway across the world, and able to come together and be one with the community. We all say the same prayers, sing the same songs, eat the same styles of food. THIS is what makes Judaism so special in my eyes. Of course there was plenty of singing after dinner, I of course only knew one or two of the songs (thank goodness for Hebrew school and Jewish summer camp) :) It definitely got loud with the singing and banging on the tables; and there were the moments of deep discussion and sharing too. All in all, I had a great one! Hope you did too.
